Talking to friends and family

2 min read

People want to help but do not always know how. Tell them what you need. “I need someone to sit with me” is different from “I need advice” or “I want to be distracted.”

You do not have to explain everything. A short version is enough: “We broke up, I am struggling, and I would love some company.”

If a friend keeps criticizing your ex, and it does not help, you can say: “I know you care, but I am not ready to hear that.” If they keep asking for updates, set a boundary the same way.

And if you do not have people nearby, look for small connections: a class, a walking group, a support community. One person is enough to start.
