Why no contact works, and when it does not
3 min read
No contact means giving yourself a stretch of time with no messages, calls, likes or checking in. It is not a strategy to win someone back and it is not a punishment. It is a way to stop reopening the wound while it heals.
Each contact, even a friendly one, brings back the mix of hope and hurt. Your mind starts scanning again: what did that mean, will they write, what should I say. Silence lets the scanning quiet down.
How long? Many people find thirty days is the first stretch where things feel different, and sixty to ninety is where they feel steadier. That is not a rule, it is a rough shape. Your own pace is the right pace.
When it does not apply: if you share children, a home or a workplace, you cannot go fully quiet. Then aim for low contact: short, polite, written and only about logistics. If the relationship was unsafe, silence is also protection, and you deserve support from people who can help.
